About Christopher Street

About Christopher Street

Published from 1976 to 1995, Christopher Street was the leading gay literary magazine of the twentieth century, and played a foundational role in the emergence of a post-Stonewall gay literary culture. It was edited by Charles Ortleb, Michael Denneny, and Thomas Steele, and featured writing from some of the leading lights of gay literature, including Andrew Holleran, Edmund White, George Stambolian, Patrick Merla, and Christopher Bram.

This website is devoted to restoring the archives of Christopher Street for a new generation of readers and researchers. It aims to present the magazine's writing and artwork in the format of a modern digital magazine for a convenient and aesthetic reading experience, and eventually to supply historical context and commentary on the magazine's ideas and legacy.

New articles will be added to the site as they are digitized. To receive them in your inbox as they are published, subscribe to our newsletter. For more information about the project, contact christopherstreetmag@gmail.com.
